SONATE FOR VIOLA AND PIANO op 47 3rd MVT.avi

  • The movement of my viola sonata is inspired by visiting the Armenian Genocide Memorial , on a cold Winter's day in December 2011. The eternal flame was burning, but there was nobody, no sounds, only the wind. The high stela, pointing to Heaven, seemed to disappear into the low sky. Structure of the piece: AAB form; atonal section (A) played twice. There is no melody, the substance of this part is the dotted rhythm / minor second - motive in the viola and the dissonance sounding in the diminished octave (c sharp/c natural). All dissonant tones are allowed to resonate beyond the barline through the use of the pedal in the piano. The shorter tonal section, (B) played only once, is written in in A minor but ending in F major. Unlike the other movements, this 3rd movement has no thematic relation with the other movements.
